Opposition protest reported in Tirana March 28; significant police presence and localized traffic disruptions reported

Protests reportedly attempted to storm the parliament building in Tirana on Thursday, March 28, during demonstrations to demand fresh elections and call for the departure of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Security forces reportedly dispersed demonstrators and subsequently erected barricades around the parliament building. A significant police presence and localized traffic disruptions have been reported in central Tirana.

Further clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out. Additional protests are possible in Tirana and other urban centers across the country over the near term. 

Context

Opposition supporters have held several demonstrations in Tirana in recent weeks outside of the parliament building to denounce perceived government corruption and demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Security forces have fired water cannons and tear gas to disperse demonstrators in recent weeks. Clashes between protesters and police were reported during a related demonstration in Tirana on March 16.
