Germany: Severe weather prompts travel disruptions March 10

Red weather alerts (the highest on a four-tier scale) are in effect across much of southern and central Germany as of Sunday evening (local time), March 10, due to strong winds. These storm conditions sweeping west to east across Germany have caused significant transportation disruptions on Sunday, forcing Deutsche Bahn (Germany's national railway) to cancel numerous routes, prompting flight delays and cancelations, and downing trees onto roads. Train service to and from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, was temporarily halted, and international service to and from Belgium and the Netherlands remains canceled as of Sunday evening (local time); affected passengers have been offered refunds or will be allowed to use their tickets on an alternate date. In addition, weather-related flight disruptions (delays, cancelations) have been reported at Cologne Bonn International Airport (CGN) and Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS); further disruptions remain possible at these and other regional airports. Hazardous road conditions in affected areas are to be anticipated as high winds have toppled trees and strewn debris on motorways. Wind gusts of up to 120 kph (90 mph) are forecast through Sunday evening, with conditions expected to improve on Monday.
