As of Thursday, March 14, the Malaysian government has ordered all 111 schools to close in Pasir Gudang (Johor State) following the illegal dumping of toxic waste into a nearby river. Over 500 people have received medical treatment after inhaling the hazardous fumes; at least 160 people were admitted to the hospital for symptoms such as breathing difficulties, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Local sources have reported that the waste is believed to contain chemicals used to dissolve metal at a scrapyard and a chemical factory, although this is yet to be confirmed. Police have reportedly detained two factory owners and one worker in connection with the dumping of waste.
