Warning

Event

Nigerian officials reopened border crossings on Sunday, March 10, at 12:00 (local time) following a temporary closure during the Saturday, March 9, gubernatorial and state legislative elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) began announcing election results on Sunday and more results are expected in the coming days, along with associated disruptions, such as protests, political rallies, and related transportation disruptions and possible clashes with security forces.

As of 07:15 (local time) on Monday, March 11, INEC has declared several elections "inconclusive," including the governor races in Bauchi and Plateau and some local elections due to "canceled" votes in polling stations with overvoting or reports of violence and intimidation. According to Nigerian law, INEC will hold reelections in affected municipalities within 21 days. Polling is expected as early as Tuesday, March 12, for Kwali (Federal Capital Territory). A heightened security presence and some local business and government disruptions are possible in areas with reelections.

Context

Nigeria held gubernatorial and state legislative elections on Saturday, March 9, following nationwide presidential elections on February 23. INEC reported "widespread disruption" at polling places, including intimidation and some reports of violence.

Advice

Individuals in Nigeria are advised to monitor the situation, avoid public political demonstrations due to the risk of violence, anticipate a heightened security presence and localized disruptions during any reelection dates, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
