Venezuela: Protests to be held in Caracas March 19 /update 9
Opposition coalition Frente Amplio calls for anti-government protests in Caracas on March 19; clashes between security forces and protesters possible

The Frente Amplio opposition coalition has called for anti-government protests to take place in the capital Caracas on Tuesday, March 19. Protesters are expected to gather at 09:00 (local time) at Plaza Morelos and march to the National Assembly building to demand a new labour legislation aimed at protecting employees of the public sector. Furthrmore, another protest is expected to be held in front of the UN Development Program (PNUD) building in Caracas, later in the afternoon on March 19.
Additional opposition-led protests are likely to persist over the coming days. A heightened security presence is expected in the vicinity of all such demonstrations and clashes between protesters and security forces, as well as arrests, are likely.
Context
Venezuela is experiencing an ongoing crisis spurred by President Nicolás Maduro's inauguration to a second term as president on January 10 following last year's contested election, prompting the National Assembly to declare a national emergency. At least 50 foreign governments, including the US, Canada, and Brazil, among others, have since recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the interim head of state. Guaidó has reportedly coordinated several deliveries of humanitarian aid from neighboring states which have been blocked by the Maduro regime.
