Mexico: Indigenous union plans rallies April 10

The CNI-CIG indigenous union plans rallies across Chiapas and Morelos states on April 10; heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions expected

The CNI-CIG indigenous union is calling for rallies and demonstrations across Chiapas and Morelos states on Wednesday, April 10, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the assassination of General Emiliano Zapata Salazar. Demonstrations are expected to be held in major urban areas in Chiapas state, including Tuxtla Gutiérrez , Arriaga, Comitán de Domínguez, Ocosingo, Palenque, San Cristóbal, and Tapachula. In San Cristóbal, participants are scheduled to meet near the Hospital de las Culturas at 09:00 (local time) before marching toward Cathedral of San Cristóbal. Around 5000 people are also expected to gather in Los Altos region, where business owners say they will close their shops in the downtown area during the rally. In Morelos state, a demonstration will be held in the Amilicingo area (Temoac municipality) on Tuesday, April 9, from 10:00 until 18:00. On Wednesday, the main rally will take place in Chinameca, starting at 09:00. Heightened security measures and transportation and business disruptions are expected around all protest sites.
