New Zealand: Auckland scales back Anzac Day commemorations
Auckland city officials reduce the number of Anzac Day events following security request from the police; 26 events scheduled for April 25

The city of Auckland has announced that the city will significantly scale back the number of this year's Anzac Day (April 25) commemorative events at the request of police officials, in order to "consolidate" events so that sufficient security resources can be deployed at each gathering. As a result, 26 events will be held in Auckland - New Zealand's largest city - on Thursday, April 25, compared to the 84 that were held in the area in 2018. The change was made amid increased security concerns in the wake of the March 15 terrorist attack in Christchurch. Heightened security measures, as well as associated commercial and transportation disruptions, are to be expected surrounding all Anzac Day commemorations across the country.
Context
Anzac Day is annually observed on April 25 and is a national memorial holiday in Australia and New Zealand that commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who have served and died in war. It was originally designated to honor the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who participated in the 1915 Battle of Gallipoli, the first major battle involving Australia and New Zealand in World War I.
On March 15, an anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim terrorist attacked two mosques in Christchurch, killing 50 people.
