Portugal: Disruptions amid truck drivers’ strike in several cities April 16

Fuel supplies critically low at Faro (FAO) and Lisbon (LIS) airports amid truck drivers’ strike April 16; significant delays and disruptions likely in the coming hours

Warning

Event

Fuel supplies reportedly reached critically low levels at Faro (FAO) and Lisbon (LIS) airports in the early afternoon (local time) on Tuesday, April 16, amid an ongoing strike by hazardous goods truck drivers. FAO airport is reportedly currently using its emergency fuel reserves, while LIS airport has allegedly expended the entirety of its fuel reserves. As of roughly 15:00, both airports began experiencing delays of both departing and arriving flights.

The strike, which began on Monday, April 15, has also affected fire stations, ports, public transportation, and gas stations in Lisbon, Faro, and Porto, among other cities. Despite orders from the Portuguese government to return to work immediately, the striking drivers have yet to resume deliveries. Drivers participating in the strike are reportedly demanding better working conditions, among other issues.

Transportation disruptions in Faro, Lisbon, and Porto, as well as flight disruptions (e.g. delays and cancelations) at the abovementioned airports, are to be expected over the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in Portugal, especially those in Faro, Lisbon, and Porto, are advised to monitor developments to the situation and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Individuals flying via FAO and LIS are advised to confirm flight reservations before departing for the airport and contact their airline for more information.
