Police arrest 30 people during protests and riots in Honriara as of April 25; further unrest and associated disruptions expected

Security personnel arrested at least 30 people in Honiara as of Thursday, April 25, as unrest continues in the capital following the election of Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare. Police reported illegal marches, looting, and vandalism, including damage to the Pacific Casino Hotel and shops in Chinatown and near Honiara International Airport (HIR); protests had been banned by police during the vote. At least nine security personnel were injured in the riots. Most of the unrest has been located in the eastern part of Honiara, including Chinatown and Kukum, and a heavy police presence is being reported in Henderson and Lungga. Further protests, riots, and associated disruptions to commercial activity and transportation are likely in the coming hours and days, along with an increased security presence.

Context

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare was reelected by parliament to his fourth term in office, winning 34 of 35 votes cast after an opposition coalition boycotted the vote.
