DRC: Islamic State claims new attacks in Beni territory (North Kivu) May 23

Event

The Islamic State (IS) group claimed two new attacks in Beni (North Kivu province) on Thursday, May 23. The first attack allegedly took place in Tchanitchani, where IS claimed it stormed Congolese army barracks and killed and wounded several people. Locals also reported what appears to be the same attack, but attributed the assault to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group in the Samboko-Tchanitchani area, 18 km (11 mi) away from Eringeti.

A second IS-claimed attack reportedly took place in Kumbwa village in Kamango on Thursday, but civil society groups suspect that it was the ADF rebels who attacked a Congolese army position in Musu, about 9 km (6 mi) southeast of Kamango. IS's claims of responsibility could not immediately be verified.

IS is likely to claim additional attacks in Beni territory over the coming weeks and months. A heightened security presence is also to be expected in the area over the coming weeks.

Context

The Islamic State claimed its first attack in the country on April 18, declaring it the "Central Africa Province" of the "caliphate." There has been local and international speculation regarding potential links between ADF rebels and IS militants.
