DRC: Unionized truck drivers staging indefinite strike across Haut-Katanga Province as of Dec. 17
Unionized truck drivers striking indefinitely across Haut-Katanga Province, DRC, as of Dec. 17. Transport disruptions likely.
Unionized truck drivers affiliated with the SADC Association for the Defence of Truckers' Interests are staging an indefinite strike across Haut-Katanga Province as of Dec. 17. The strike began on Dec. 16, and the purpose of the labor action is to denounce the perceived hardship of increased taxation by local authorities, including parking, tolls, and the removal of transit permits in Zambia that allegedly burdens freight haulers operating between borders. The duration of the strike remains unclear.
The strike will likely disrupt freight transport across Haut-Katanga Province and may cause business disruptions and supply chain disruptions in some areas. Protests are possible, although organizers have not announced any planned demonstrations. Authorities will likely dispatch security forces to protests that materialize. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, particularly if the protesters attempt to block vehicular traffic or ignore any orders from authorities to disperse.
Plan for disruptions to freight transport. Avoid all protests as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent any areas that are subject to protest activity. Do not drive through any roadblocks that protesters may set up; wait for authorities to dismantle them. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
