DRC: Rebel group claims responsibility for attack in South Kivu Province Nov. 25
Red Tabara group claims responsibility for attack against Burundian forces in South Kivu Province, DRC, Nov. 25. Further attacks possible.
The Red Tabara rebel group has claimed responsibility for an attack targeting Burundian forces (Force de Defense Nationale du Burundi, FNDB) in the Itombwe area in the Mwenga Territory, South Kivu Province, on Nov. 25. The exact location where the attack occurred remains unclear. While rebels said they assaulted a military base and killed at least nine soldiers, the FNDB contradicted the claim and announced that several rebels had been captured.
Security operations targeting the group are likely over the coming days; associated movement restrictions are possible, including along the N2 road. Red Tabara militants may also launch further attacks in the near term.
Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in South Kivu. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
Red Tabara opposes the government of Burundi. Based in the DRC's South Kivu Province, it is one of the most active Burundian rebel groups and has been carrying out attacks regularly since 2015, notably in Burundi along the shared border with the DRC.
