At least five killed in VBIED attack at market near Rabia (Nineveh province) May 26; similar attacks possible in northern Iraq over the coming weeks

A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) killed at least five people and wounded eight others in the village of Al-Uwaynat - near Rabia - in Nineveh province on Sunday, May 26. According to local sources, the truck bomb targeted a market; no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. 

Similar attacks are possible in northern Iraq over the coming weeks.

Context

While former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) group in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq.

Individuals in northern Iraq are advised to report suspicious objects and behavior to the police, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
