On Thursday, May 9, suspected Islamic State (IS) militants killed at least eight people in separate attacks in Nineveh and Salah Al-Din provinces. IS gunmen reportedly stormed the house of the mayor of Al-Gawar village (Nineveh province), killing him, his wife, and four of his children. In Salah Al-Din province, suspected IS militants shot and killed one person at a mill and set fire to the structure near Shirqat; an IS-planted roadside bomb also detonated at the site as security forces arrived, killing a soldier.
Similar attacks are possible in northern Iraq over the coming weeks.

While former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) group in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq.
