Peru: One killed from May 26 8.0-magnitude earthquake in northern Peru /update 2

Event

At least one person was killed in a large earthquake that hit northern Peru on Sunday, May 26, according to the Peruvian government. At least six people and as many as 11 were also injured in the disaster, which struck at 02:41 (local time) on Sunday in Loreto region. Structural damage and associated power and transportation disruptions were reported in Loreto region and cities in the area, including Yurimaguas (Loreto region) and Tarapoto (San Martín region). More details on casualties or damage may still emerge and further aftershocks are possible in northern Peru in the coming days.

Context

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded an 8.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Loreto region at 02:41 (local time) at a depth of 110 km (62 mi). The earthquake was felt across Peru and in Ecuador and Venezuela. 

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas, particularly the Amazonian regions of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and western Brazil, are advised to anticipate power and telecommunication outages, transportation disruptions (e.g. road closures, damaged roads, etc.), adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and prepare for aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves from falling debris if indoors, to move away from windows, and not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
