Saudi Arabia: Two missiles reportedly intercepted near Mecca May 19-20

According to social media reports, Saudi air defense systems intercepted two ballistic missiles above the country's airspace overnight from May 19-20 reportedly fired by suspected Houthi militants in Yemen. One was reportedly intercepted above Jeddah, and the other above Taif, which may have been targeting Mecca. Saudi officials have not confirmed the possible attacks as of Monday, April 20.

Context

Reports estimate that Houthi militants have fired over 200 missiles at Saudi Arabia since 2015, when Saudi Arabia began backing the Yemeni government against Houthi separatists in the Yemeni Civil War. Southern Saudi Arabia is a frequent target of Houthi missile attacks, and Riyadh has also seen several missile attacks in the last several months; however, they rarely result in many damages or casualties.
