South Sudan: Two-year state of emergency lifted in five northern states May 3

A two-year state of emergency imposed on five northern states of the country was lifted on Friday, May 3, by President Salva Kiir, as part of an effort to help end the civil conflict. The state of emergency had been in effect since 2017 in the states of Tonj, Wau, Aweil East, Gogrial, and Western Lakes, amid fighting between the army and rebels led by Riek Machar.
