Venezuela: Nationwide fuel shortages reported as of May 29
Fuel shortages reported across Venezuela May 29, resulting in consequent transportation and business disruptions
Event
A nationwide fuel shortage is affecting Venezuela as of Wednesday, May 29. The shortage is resulting in long lines at gas stations across the country as well as transportation and business disruptions. The fuel shortage is also affecting adjacent countries which import oil from Venezuela; long lines at gas stations, as well as rising demand for fuel, were reported in neighboring Colombia on Tuesday, May 28, notably in Cúcuta (Norte de Santander department).
The shortages come amid intermittent power outages in Venezuela - ongoing since late March - which have resulted in several protests across the country, including in Maracaibo. Additional protests cannot be ruled out. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected around demonstration sites.
Advice
Individuals in Venezuela are advised to monitor developments to the situation, fill up vehicles whenever fuel is available, ensure sufficient fuel reserves before all long journeys, expect longer waiting times at gas stations, and keep battery-operated devices fully charged whenever possible. Avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution and adhere to instructions issued by your home government.
The security situation in Venezuela remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
