Venezuela: Opposition leader calls for further protests May 11 /update 5
Opposition leader Juan Guaidó calls for protests nationwide May 11; heightened security measures and clashes possible
Event
Opposition leader Juan Guaidó has called for nationwide rallies to take place on Saturday, May 11, to maintain pressure on President Nicolás Maduro to resign and to denounce recent crackdowns by groups loyal to President Nicolás Maduro's targeting opposition national assembly deputies. Protesters are expected to gather at 10:00 (local time) in urban centres across the country, with the most prominent demonstration expected to take place in the capital Caracas. A heightened security presence is expected throughout the country, particularly in Caracas. Clashes between security forces and opposition supporters are possible.
Context
Violent protests broke out across Venezuela on Tuesday, April 30, after Guaidó called for a military uprising to oust Maduro. Fighting was particularly heavy near Generalísmo Francisco de Miranda Air Base in Caracas. At least one person was killed and over 100 others wounded after the protests carried over into Wednesday, May 1. Venezuelan intelligence agents loyal to Maduro have since then launched a crackdown against opposition politicians allegedly involved in the uprising.
Venezuela is experiencing an ongoing crisis spurred by President Nicolás Maduro's inauguration to a second term as president on January 10 following last year's contested election, prompting the National Assembly to declare a national emergency. At least 50 foreign governments, including the US, Canada, and Brazil, among others, have since recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the interim head of state.
