Venezuela: Teachers’ Union call for nationwide strike May 9

The Federación de Asociaciones de Profesores Universitarios de Venezuela (FAPUV), grouping of teachers' associations is planning to hold a nationwide 24 hour strike, including in Caracas, on Thursday, May 9. According to the president of FAPUV Lourdes Ramírez de Viloria, the strike is only the first in a series of demonstrations demanding democratic institutions and better working conditions for teachers. Protesters are expected to gather in front of the headquarters of the Pedagogical Institute of Caracas. FAPUV have threatened to carry out a 48-hour strike for the next week if their demands are not met.

Associated protests are possible during the work stoppage. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are to be anticipated around all potential protests.

Context

Venezuela is experiencing an ongoing crisis spurred by President Nicolás Maduro's inauguration to a second term as president on January 10, following last year's contested election, prompting the National Assembly to declare a national emergency. At least 50 foreign governments, including the US, Canada, and Brazil, among others, have since recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the interim head of state.
