Burkina Faso: Gunmen attack military outpost in Oursi (Oudalan province) June 3

Event

According to local sources, unidentified gunmen attacked a military base in Oursi (Oudalan province) on Monday, June 3. The assailants reportedly opened fire on the base with rockets and small arms fire before being repelled by security forces. There were no reported casualties.

Similar attacks are possible over the coming weeks.

Context

Terrorism has become an increasingly severe security threat in Burkina Faso since 2015. Educational institutions, local government officials, and security forces are specifically targeted. On January 11, Burkina Faso's parliament extended a state of emergency effective in Est and Sahel regions, the western provinces of Kossi and Sourou, the central-eastern province of Koulpélogo, the western province of Kénédougou, and northern province of Lorum by six months.
