DRC: Possible opposition protests in Kinshasa June 30 despite ban /update 1
Opposition protest may take place in Kinshasa on June 30 despite a ban on gatherings
Event
Opposition supporters from the Lamuka party may stage protests in Kinshasa on Sunday, June 30, despite a ban issued by local authorities on Friday, June 28. Protesters intend to denounce a recent decision from the Constitutional Court to nullify 23 electoral seats at the National Assembly. Protesters from all 24 districts in Kinshasa were expected to march to the Place de l'Echangeur in the city's Limete area, starting at 10:00 (local time). If the protest goes ahead despite the ban, it may result in clashes with security forces.
A heightened security presence along with traffic disruptions are likely around any demonstration sites.
Further related protests are possible in the coming weeks.
Context
Related protets were held on June 13 and 15. On June 15, police forces used tear gas to disperse the protesters.
Advice
Individuals in the DRC are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations due to the risk of violence and arrest, refrain from discussing political topics in public, and adhere to all instructions issued by their home government and local authorities.
