Security forces killed Brigadier General Asaminew Tsige outside Bahir Dar (Amhara region) on Monday, June 24, according to a government spokesman. At least 182 others have been arrested as of Monday in a security crackdown across the country, including four high-ranking regional security officials in Amhara. Further security operations and violence are likely in the coming days along with associated disruptions, including road closures, checkpoints, heightened security presence, and continued telecommunication and internet disruptions.

Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa remains operational as of Tuesday morning (local time), June 25.

Context

Gunmen killed four major political figures, including the Amhara regional president and the Ethiopian army chief of staff, in twin attacks in Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar (Amhara region) on Saturday, June 22. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed labeled the attacks an attempted coup and has blamed Brigadier General Asaminew Tsige, the head of Amhara region's security.

The nation's internet service has been shut down since Saturday.
