Warning

Event

On the afternoon (local time) of Thursday, June 6, additional security personnel were reportedly deployed into the capital of Monrovia. According to local media reports, members of the military, police, and paramilitary forces armed with riot gear paraded through the downtown area of the city. The increased security deployment comes a day before the scheduled "Save the State" protest on Friday, June 7, which is being organized by the Council of Patriots (COP) association. According to the protest organizers, the rally is being held to demand meaningful reforms that will lead to improved living standards for Liberians and does not aim to demand the resignation of President George Weah. Marchers are expected to gather in Capitol Hill before traveling down Tubman Boulevard.

While the protest organizers have vowed to remain peaceful, a heightened security presence is expected in the city and clashes between security forces and demonstrators cannot be ruled out. Localized traffic disruptions and commercial disruptions are also anticipated in the capital.

Advice

Individuals in Monrovia are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
