Malaysia: Widespread flooding displaces 1000 people in Sarawak June 6

Widespread flooding in northern and central Sarawak state displaces at least 1000 people as of June 6; emergency response personnel and aid supplies deployed to region

Warning

Event

The Malaysian government deployed emergency response personnel and food aid to northern and central Sarawak state due to widespread flooding as of Thursday, June 6. The flooding, which began on Tuesday morning (local time), June 4, has displaced at least 1000 people in Belaga district. At least ten villages in northern Sarawak's Miri division were also inundated by floodwaters. Significant transportation disruptions are expected along with power outages and limited availability of food, water, and medical supplies. Rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue in the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in Sarawak are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate power and transportation disruptions and continued flooding, ensure adequate supplies of food, drinking water, and medical supplies, and never drive through flooded roads. Remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult or affect driving - and floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products.
