New Zealand: Third earthquake strikes near Kermadec Islands June 16 /update 2

Event

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded by the US Geological Survey (USGS) approximately 93 km (58 mi) east-northeast of L'Esperance Rock (New Zealand) at 17:17 (local time) on Sunday, June 16. The quake occurred at a depth of 35 km (22 mi) and no tsunami warning was immediately issued. Earlier in the day, a 7.2 and 5.5-magnitude earthquake were recorded in the region. Further aftershocks are possible in the region in the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the abovementioned areas are advised to monitor developments, prepare for aftershocks, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
