Peru: Nationwide general strike planned on June 20
Unions plan nationwide strike on June 20; road, rail, and other transportation disruptions expected
Event
Members of the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) and the National Assembly of the People (ANP) have announced a nationwide general strike on Thursday, June 20, to protest against the government's labor policies, the rising cost of living, low employment, privatization in health sectors, and education, among other issues.
Activity is particularly expected in Lima, the capital, where protestors will gather at the Plaza Dos de Mayo at 12:00 (local time) and proceed to Plaza San Martin. Later, they will march to Congress at 16:00. Further related protests should also be expected in urban centers, near government building and similar public squares.
A heightened security presence is possible near all protests. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Individuals in Peru, and particularly Lima, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized disruption and a heightened security presence in the event of any demonstrations, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
