Venezuela: Nationwide strikes planned on June 19-21

Opposition leader Juan Guaidó has called on Venezuelans to take to the streets in a nationwide strike on Wednesday, June 19, Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21, to coincide with the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Michelle Bachelet's visit to Venezuela. The protest is to call attention to the human rights abuses that have occurred in the country under President Nicolas Maduro's presidency. Activity is particularly expected in Caracas, where the High Commissioner will spend three days.

A heightened security presence is possible near all protests. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out. 

Context

Venezuela is experiencing an ongoing crisis spurred by President Nicolás Maduro's inauguration to a second term as president on January 10 following last year's contested election, prompting the National Assembly to declare a national emergency. At least 50 foreign governments, including the US, Canada, and Brazil, among others, have since recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the interim head of state.
