Cyprus: Peace and Freedom Day celebrations in North Nicosia July 19-20
Peace and Freedom Day celebrations to take place in North Nicosia and elsewhere in Northern Cyprus July 19 – 20; transportation and commercial disruptions expected
Event
Peace and Freedom Day celebrations are scheduled to take place in Northern Cyprus on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20. Activities are set to begin around midday (local time) on July 19 and will continue through July 20 across Northern Cyprus, including in North Nicosia. Associated demonstrations are possible at the United Nations Buffer Zone (also know as the "Green Line"), along with counter-demonstrations in Cyprus.
Although Peace and Freedom Day celebrations will likely pass off peacefully, associated transportation disruptions and commercial closures are expected.
Context
Turkish Cypriots celebrate Peace and Freedom Day to mark the anniversary of the July 20, 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, which toppled the ruling Greek military junta. The invasion led to the creation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC); a de facto state recognized only by Turkey. Although the entire island is internationally recognized as the Republic of Cyprus, a United Nations Buffer Zone separates the area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus in the south and that controlled by the TRNC in the North.
Advice
Individuals in Northern Cyprus are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid large gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
