Nepal: Torrential monsoon rains and flooding leave 30 dead as of July 13

As of Saturday, July 13, torrential monsoon rains and consequent flash flooding and landslides have left 30 people dead in Nepal since the rainfall began in earnest on Thursday, July 11. The monsoon rains have reportedly affected some 21 districts in eastern and central Nepal and have destroyed the homes of at least 1175 people, while also causing landslides which have obstructed highways at 11 points across the country. Flooding is particularly threatening areas near the banks of the Kosi River in the eastern part of the country, with officials advising residents in affected areas to remain vigilant. Thousands of police officers have been mobilized to conduct relief and rescue work in areas particularly affected by flooding.

Further heavy rainfall is forecast in already-affected areas through at least Sunday, July 14, which may exacerbate flooding and consequent disruptions to transportation and business.

Individuals in eastern and central Nepal are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, anticipate flooding along with transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. Be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contract with the water should be disinfected and all food discarded.
