Senegal: Protests expected in Dakar July 6
Aar Li Nu Bokk group calls for a demonstration in Dakar July 6; localised disruptions expected
Event
The Aar Li Nu Bokk civil society group has called for a demonstration in Dakar on Saturday, July 6, to denounce President Macky Sall's alleged involvement in a petroleum sector corruption scandal and to call for greater transparency in government efforts to exploit the country's natural resources. Protesters are expected to gather at Allées du Centenaire from 14:00 to 19:00 (local time).
Related protests may be held in other urban centers.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be anticipated near all protest sites. Clashes between protesters, as well as between protesters and security forces, cannot be ruled out. Similar protests are possible over the coming weeks.
Context
Aar Li Nu Bokk has previously staged anti-government demonstrations on June 14, 21 and 28. At least 17 people were wounded in clashes between police and protesters on June 14.
Advice
Individuals in Dakar are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any public demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate localized traffic disruptions and a heightened security presence near demonstration sites.
