Tropical Storm Danas to pass over South Korea July 20-21, bringing heavy rain and high winds; flooding, power outages, and transportation disruptions possible

Tropical Storm Danas is forecast to pass over South Korea between Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21, bringing severe weather and a high storm surge. As of 21:30 (local time) on Thursday, July 18, the storm was located at 26.7°N, 123.8°E, roughly 300 km (186 mi) northeast of Taipei (Taiwan), and producing winds of 74 kph (46 mph) with gusts of up to 92 kph (58 mph). Danas is forecast to make landfall on Jeju Island on Saturday before it hits South Jeolla province. Rainfall totals of 150-300 mm (6-12 in) are forecast for the provinces of South Jeolla and South Gyeongsang as well as the cities of Busan and Ulsan, with wind gusts of up to 110 kph (70 mph) through Sunday, July 21.

Localized rainfall totals in excess of 300 mm (12 in) are possible in the abovementioned areas. Consequent flooding is to be expected along with associated material damages, road closures, flight and train disruptions, and power outages in affected areas.
