Chile: Aftershocks recorded off coast of O'Higgins region August 1 /update 1

Event

Aftershocks continue to be reported off of O'Higgins region as of Thursday afternoon (local time), August 1, following the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of central Chile at 14:28. The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded two subsequent earthquakes measuring 4.9 and 5.8 in magnitude; however, none of the aftershocks have resulted in significant damage. 

Context

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.8-magnitude offshore earthquake off of O'Higgins region on August 1. The quake hit at 14:28 (local time) at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). Officials did not issue a tsunami warning following the initial quake.

Advice

Individuals near the affected areas are advised to be prepared for aftershocks and to adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves from falling debris if indoors, to move away from windows, and not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
