A general strike, including rail and airport staff, will affect transportation nationwide August 22-24; confirm travel itineraries

Warning

Event

Several groups, including transportation staff, have called for a three-day nationwide general strike, beginning on Thursday, August 22, until Saturday, August 24. Protesters look to protest the government and call upon it to free political prisoners, among other grievances. Related protests should be expected in Managua and other urban centers during this period.

Protesters have also called on the private sector to close its businesses in protest, which may produce commercial disruptions over the three-day strike.

Significant disruptions to business and daily activities are likely across the country in the coming days. Transportation disruptions, including bus, rail, and air, are expected. Delays and cancellations are possible in airports across the country, including at Managua International Airport (MGA). Associated protests are also possible in the coming days and weeks.

Advice

Individuals in Nicaragua are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, confirm travel itineraries, and seek alternative means of transportation as needed.
