Nicaragua: Opposition calls for nationwide vehicle stoppage August 20

Nicaragua’s opposition party calls for a nationwide vehicle stoppage on August 20; transportation disruptions likely

Warning

Event

Opposition coalition Blue and White National Unit (UNAB) has called upon Nicaraguans to refrain from using vehicles nationwide on Tuesday, August 20, in protest against the government. Protesters seek to minimize the amount of fuel purchased, which they argue keeps President Daniel Ortega and the Sandinista government wealthy. They also seek to draw attention to the violence they say the regime uses to remain in power and show overall discontent across the country.

The shortage of vehicular transport, including taxis and chauffeured vehicles, is possible.

Advice

Individuals in Nicaragua are advised to reconfirm taxi reservations and seek alternate means of transportation as needed.
