Peru: Anti-mining protests scheduled nationwide amid heightened security August 5 /update 2

Event

The Departmental Federation of Arequipa Workers (FDTA) has called for a general strike to be held on Monday, August 5, in the Islay province against a large mining project at the Tia Maria mine. The indefinite strike is in protest of the mining project, which will be accompanied by region-wide protests. Residents working in other sectors, including education and agriculture, will also protest to support the cause.

Related protests are largely expected in other parts of the country in solidarity with Islay province's residents. 

President Martin Vizcarra announced on Sunday, August 4, that the army will be deployed to support local police to control protests and to secure the mining port of Matarani Port Terminal.

A heightened security presence, along with significant traffic disruptions, are expected in the vicinity of all protest sites.

Context

Residents of the Islay province have been protesting the mining project since mid-July, expressing concerns for the mine's environmental impact. The protests have produced notable transportation disruptions, including road blockades.
