South Korea: Tropical Depression Francisco moves into the East Sea August 7 /update 1

Event

Typhoon Francisco made landfall near the city of Busan at approximately 20:20 (local time) on Tuesday, August 6, before rapidly weakening to a tropical depression. The storm moved north along the coast through the morning of Wednesday, August 7, before moving into the East Sea. Francisco brought torrential rains to parts of Gangwon and Gyeongsang provinces as well as strong winds in southern areas of the country. In Gangwon, some areas received up to 14-16 cm (5-6 in) of rain and heavy rain warnings remain in effect for northern mountainous regions through Wednesday. Over 90 flights were canceled at Gimhae International Airport (PUS) in Busan on Tuesday and residual flight disruptions are possible on August 7.

Associated flooding, landslides, and transportation disruptions are possible along the eastern coastal areas through Wednesday.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
