South Korea: Weather warnings issued for southern coastal areas August 6-7

The Korean Meteorological Administration issued weather warnings for Typhoon Francisco that is due to make landfall in the evening (local time) of Tuesday, August 6. As of 11:00, the Administration has issued a typhoon warning along the southern coastline of the South Sea. The storm is expected to bring strong winds and may cause severe damage. Officials also warned of heavy rain in all parts of the country except Jeju. Coastal areas in the south of Gyeongsang province and in Gangwon province are expected to see over 20 cm (8 in) of rain, while Gyeongsang province and North Chungcheong province are forecast to receive between 5-15 cm (2-6 in) of rain. Francisco is currently forecast to pass over southern parts of the Korean Peninsula through Wednesday, August 7, in a north-northwest movement with maximum sustained winds of 72 kph (45 mph), and moving at a maximum speed of 29 kph (18 mph).

Flooding, landslides, power outages, and transportation disruptions, including train delays and road closures, are possible.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
