Chile: Civil society groups to protest and strike nationwide September 5

Several civil society groups are calling for nationwide protests and a work stoppage on September 5; heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions expected

At least 50 civil society groups have called for nationwide protests on Thursday, September 5, to demand democratic change and better rights. Organizers are planning a nationwide work stoppage at 12:00 (local time) and a "cacerolazo" at 20:00 in which participants plan to protest by making loud noises. Participants plan to gather at Plaza Bacquedano in Santiago at 11:00 and then march to Bulnes Square, at Yungay Plazuela in Osorno at 18:30, and at Plaza Dagoberto in Temuco from 11:00. Further protests are likely in other major urban areas.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation and business disruptions are expected throughout the country.
