Chile: Coup anniversary events on September 11 /update 1

Several groups to hold coup anniversary events on September 11; transportation and business disruptions likely

Warning

Event

Various anniversary events and protests are to be expected across Chile on Wednesday, September 11, as it marks the 46th anniversary of a military coup. Political and social groups have planned various events across the country, most notably in Santiago. One such event is hosted by the Coordinadora Feminista 8M group, which has scheduled a protest in Santiago on Wednesday to commemorate the anniversary and to remember the women who fought in it. Participants plan to gather at 18:30 (local time) at Plaza Italia.

Power outages were implemented in 2018, and remain possible, though no official message has been issued on the subject.

A heightened security presence is likely throughout Santiago and other urban centers to quell any violence and maintain order. An estimated 92 people were arrested at a protest on Thursday, September 5, during a nationwide protest demanding democratic changes. Clashes with police therefore cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Santiago, and Chile more generally, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
