Opposition supporters plan rallies in Kinshasa September 19, 22; avoid all gatherings
Event
Supporters of the opposition party, Engagement pour la Citoyenneté et le Développement (ECIDé) lead by Martin Fayulu, are planning to hold a peaceful march in Kinshasa on Thursday, September 19, to commemorate those killed during a protest on September 19, 2016. Protesters are expected to gather at the ECIDé's headquarter on Boulevard Triomphal (Kasa-Vubu district) and then proceed to the Saint Joseph de Matonge church located in the Kalamu district.
Furthermore, the ECiDé will hold a political gathering on Sunday, September 22, at the junction of Elengesa and Mukoso avenues located in the Makala district of the capital. The rally will start at 14:00 (local time).
Heightened security measures and localised traffic disruptions are likely in areas surrounding the events. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Individuals in Kinshasa are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations due to the risk of violence and arrest, refrain from discussing political topics in public, and adhere to all instructions issued by their home government and local authorities.
