Nigeria: Land borders remain closed until further notice as of September 12 /update 1
Land borders with Benin, Cameroon, and Niger to remain closed until further notice as of September 12
Event
The Nigerian government announced on Thursday, September 12, that land borders with Niger, Benin, and Cameroon, closed since August 20, will remain closed until further notice. Authorities stated the move was meant to ensure neighbouring countries "agree on existing protocol on movement", as in enforcing the use of proper documentation on immigration and curtailing the importation of locally produced commodities. The government also cited the trafficking of illicit goods and other smuggling activities as additional reasons to close the borders.
Additional security patrols were reportedly deployed to enforce the measure and secure the border.
A heightened security presence, increased checkpoints, transportation delays, and processing delays at these border regions are to be expected.
Advice
Individuals in the area are advised to adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and remain vigilant for militant and criminal behavior.
