Oman: Tropical Storm Hikaa to affect Oman September 24
Tropical Storm Hikaa to affect coastal areas of southern Oman September 24; heavy rain and strong winds expected
Event
Oman is expected to receive heavy rain and strong winds from the evening (local time) of Tuesday, September 24, as Tropical Storm Hikaa moves across the Arabian Sea into the region. As of 17:00 on Tuesday, Hikaa is located at approximately 20.3°N, 64.1°E, 540 km (335 mi) east of Masirah Island. A gradual weakening of the storm is expected over the next 24 hours as it approaches the Sultanate. According to Oman's Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA), Hikaa is forecast to impact the coastal provinces of Al Wusta, Ash Sharqiyah South, and Ash Sharqiyah North by Tuesday evening, bringing 3-6 cm (1-2 in) of rainfall.
Associated power outages and disruptions to transportation and business services are possible in areas forecast to be affected by the system over the coming days.
Advice
Individuals in areas forecast to be affected by the system are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
