Chad: Legislative elections postponed to 2020 /update 2

Legislative elections postponed to 2020 due to organizational and financial issues

Warning

Event

On Thursday, October 3, the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) announced that legislative elections, initially scheduled to take place in 2015, have been postponed once again, to the first quarter of 2020. The government cited the need to implement electoral reforms and gather funds prior to the vote, the date of which has not yet been determined. Further postponements are possible if electoral reforms are not implemented and funds not allocated. Related protests cannot be ruled out in the coming days.

Context

The legislative elections have been postponed twice so far, first in November 2018 and again in October 2019.

Chad is facing economic difficulties as a result of a drop in global oil prices.

Advice

Individuals in Chad are advised to monitor the situation and avoid all protests as a precaution due to the risk of violence.
