Warning

Event

Several trade unions have called for a nationwide strike and protests between Tuesday, October 22, through Wednesday, October 23. Health sector employees plan to strike and protest on Tuesday, while education sector employees are due to carry out the nationwide strike and protests from Tuesday through Wednesday. Organizers did not immediately announce protest locations or meeting times. However, as of Saturday, October 19, a curfew is in place between 22:00 and 07:00 (local time) in Santiago and a few surrounding areas. It is unclear as of early morning on Sunday, October 20, whether the planned nationwide strike and protests will still go ahead.

A heightened security presence, business, and transportation disruptions are expected during all protest action - particularly in major urban areas - should the strikes and protests proceed.

Advice

Individuals in Chile, and particularly in Santiago, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and a heightened security presence, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
