At least one person was killed and 20 others wounded in Addis Ababa on Wednesday, October 23, amid protests in support of Oromo activist Jawar Mohammed. Thousands gathered outside Mohammed's home on the outskirts of the capital after the government attempted to withdraw his security detail. Clashes between protesters and security forces ensued after police fired gunshots and tear gas to forcibly disperse the demonstration. Associated protests were also held in Adama, Jimma, and Ambo, where four people were reportedly shot by security forces.
A heightened security presence has been reported in Addis Ababa and is expected to remain over the coming hours. Localized disruptions are also to be anticipated.
