Germany: Police carry out manhunt in Halle and its surroundings following shooting October 9 /update 1

Police are carrying out a manhunt for several suspects involved in a shooting in Halle on Wednesday, October 9. Several gunmen fired several shots from what is reported to be a submachine gun which killed at least two people near a kebab shop and synagogue. The gunmen have since fled by car, prompting police to carry out their search in towns near Halle and in Leipzig, where reports indicate one suspect was spotted.

Police have issued a state of emergency, mobilizing all available police units to assist in the investigation in Halle. Authorities have stated that one suspect has been arrested and have warned residents of Halle to remain in their homes and away from windows. Heightened security has been reported in synagogues in Leipzig and Dresden.

According to media reports, a suspect also shot several times near a Jewish cemetery, injuring passers-by and also threw a hand grenade into the cemetery. More shots have also reportedly been heard in Landsberg.

The Halle train station has since been closed. The Leipzig train station remains open. Details are emerging.
