Ghana: Heavy rain and flooding kill at least 28 in Upper East region
Heavy rain and consequent flooding in Upper East region kill 28 October 10-18; associated disruptions likely
Event
Heavy rain and consequent flooding have hit the Upper East region (northeast) since Thursday, October 10, killing at least 28 people as of Friday, October 18. Over 1500 houses have also been destroyed and about 140 people displaced as a result of the inclement weather.
The Ghanaian meteorological department has forecasted further rainfall across the country in the coming weeks, likely resulting in further flooding. Associated disruptions, including transportation disruptions, are likely in the coming days.
Advice
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions prior to setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. It is important to note that that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
