Islamic State (IS) militants killed two security personnel in attacks on two security checkpoints in the Allas oil fields area (Saladin province) on Monday, October 21. An improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in a vehicle belonging to security forces stationed there, resulting in the death of the two security personnel. Militants reportedly also opened fired on the security forces, injuring three.
Similar IS attacks targeting security personnel are possible in northern Iraq over the near term.
Context
While former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) group in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq.
