Malaysia: Flooding reported in five states October 29

Flooding prompts evacuation of thousands of people across five states October 29; situation to continue over the coming days

As of Tuesday, October 29, the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) reported that at least 1954 people have been affected by heavy rain and associated flooding in the Selangor, Penang, Johor, Perak, and Kedah states. The Civil Defense Force (APM) declared on Monday, October 28, that 900 boats and 12,000 personnel were deployed for rescue efforts. An additional 8000 personnel will be mobilized if the situation worsen.

Rainfall is forecast to continue at least through Tuesday, November 5. Transportation and business disruptions along with possible flash floods and landslides are expected in the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in the states of Selangor, Penang, Johor, Perak, and Kedah are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
